So, I have a '63 Ranchero project, one day to look much like the one in this picture, and it hath a hood hump. The scoop is wholly fake, however, as with many to all of the chrome bits on the car, it needs rechroming. The question is, do I make it into a real scoop before rechroming? I will have a set of velocity stacks to feed, though not a huge amount of displacement, and may have the radiator moved back, so non-hot air from the nose should also be available. For reasons of display, I may make a panel to lift out of the hump to show the stacks, but for everyday driving, probably have the hood whole.
Thoughts/suggestions?

Probably degrade the value if it were turned into a functional scoop.

Well, "value" herein being a very loose thing, since I got it for $800 and am planning an engine/trans swap and relocation, a rear suspension redesign, rear window/roof changes, and need floorboards. There's the idea of being a well-executed custom, though, so a lot would depend on whether it would come off well, and I'm not sure of the overall effect visually.
That being said, I wouldn't get much air through it itself if it *were* functional, but it would promote airflow to the stacks from the rest of the air under the hood, I'd reckon - much like a wing slat. There's also always the option of removing the original trim and using some type of edging on the hole.

With the above provided information, I vote opened gap using the original trim pieces. If your going for a "Well executed custom" while maintaining the original aesthetic and style its the best way to go.
